My question is for the Minister for Local Government. I had a constituent in Manningham contact me regarding rebates on cloth nappies and plastic-free period products. 3.75 million disposable nappies are used each day in Australia and New Zealand. These end up in landfill. Cloth nappies and plastic-free period products are environmentally friendly alternatives. Because of this some councils are providing rebates for these products. Unfortunately this rebate is not provided by the Manningham City Council, so I ask if there are any plans for rebates on cloth nappies and plastic-free period products to be rolled out throughout the Eastern Metropolitan Region.

I thank Mr Barton for his question. Victorian councils operate as a distinct tier of government, with democratically elected councillors. Councils are responsible for implementing projects to encourage the use of cloth nappies and reduce disposable nappy waste. The Government supports councils to make such decisions on behalf of their own communities. I note that some councils do offer schemes to encourage the use of cloth nappies, including Banyule City Council in the Eastern Metropolitan region. I would encourage your constituent to contact Manningham City Council to enquire about their future plans.
