Media Release – Time for Action: Homelessness Report Provides Practical Recommendations

Mar 19, 2021 | Advocacy, Media Releases

Rod Barton’s motion to inquire into Victoria’s Homelessness crisis has come to a close with the Legal and Social Issues Committee making fifty-one recommendations in the ‘Homelessness in Victoria’ Report.

Thank you to the chair, Ms Fiona Patten, and the Committee for taking this body of work seriously and for putting together a report to be proud of.

Mr Barton MP, and Leader of the Transport Matters Party, has continued to bring this issue to the government’s attention and has advocated for increasing wrap around support services and the available social housing for Victoria’s homeless.

‘I am very proud of this report and its recommendations on tackling homelessness.’ Mr Barton stated.

The report noted that whilst the Andrews Labor Government has recently introduced several important projects to get individuals off the street and a roof over their heads, there is still more work that needs to be done.

Significantly the report outlined several areas that require immediate additional funding to aid homeless Victorians and those on the brink of homelessness. This included additional funding for early intervention programs, housing, legal support services and other much needed services.

‘I have learnt a lot throughout this inquiry’ stated Mr Barton ‘and upon reading the final report, it is clear what needs to be done now.’

Mr Barton is hopeful that the government will adopt these recommendations and work towards solving homelessness together.

Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Metropolitan and the Leader of the Transport Matters Party Rod Barton MP:

While this may be the end of the inquiry, this is the beginning of seeing real change that will tackle homelessness, save lives and provide wrap-around support to those in need.’
