Isobel White

Oct 6, 2021 | Advocacy, News, Parliament

Mr BARTON (Eastern Metropolitan) (16:17): This week an incredible, special member of our taxi family passed away. Isobel White was a hardworking advocate for the taxi industry and was also a personal supporter of me and my journey to come to this place. Isobel and her husband, Stan, created a magazine called Taxi Talk 66 years ago. Their daughter, Toni, continues their legacy to this day. The magazine is now called Drive Now, which has spread across the country. Isobel and Stan were fortunate enough to have their diamond anniversary back in March: 60 years of marriage, and what an achievement that is. She was a mad Collingwood supporter and was loved by all who knew her.

I would like to extend my condolences to her daughter, Toni, her son-in-law, Mark, and the grandkids. She will be dearly missed. In her lifetime Isobel saw a once-thriving industry that supported our families become yet another victim of the gig economy. We are taxi drivers, hire car drivers and rideshare drivers, and we are all fighting for basic workers rights and a smaller piece of the pie every day. I will end with this: it is people like Isobel who give me the reason to come to this place and fight for what is fair. I will continue to do just that. And one last time, Isobel: go those Pies.
