Dear Mr Barton,

Congratulations from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers on all your efforts to give greater choice to Victorians who pursue their legal rights via a class action by passing the Justice Legislation Miscellaneous Amendments Bill 2019.

I know how much this means to you and the people you represent in the Victorian Parliament. Your own story is an absolute testament to the importance of class actions for giving everyday Victorians access to justice – and to the benefits to everyday Victorians of allowing them greater choice in how they pursue their own legal rights.

We all really hope you savoured this remarkable legislative victory. Your energy and integrity in delivering on the policies you advocated for at the election and delivering for the people on whose support you relied for success is all too rare in contemporary politics, and deserves to be highly commended.

On a personal note, can I just say your statement about the Australian Industry Group’s lobbying efforts back in March “We’re not going to be bullied by blokes in suits from Collins Street … We’re going to stand up for blokes who drive taxis” was the best thing I’ve read in the Age this year, and I reckon this will still be true by New Year’s Eve.
